Patents applications are protected in Egypt under the Egyptian IPR Law No. 82 /2002, the First Book and its’ Executive Regulation.
Applications are to be filed as a National Application or as a PCT National Phase Entry with a period of protection of 20 years for patents and 07 years for utility models as from the filing date.
Patent applications and utility models are to be examined based on the following:
- Novelty
- New inventive step.
- Applicability.
A patent invention should contain all 03 conditions to be granted in Egypt.
Once being granted, the invention acquire legal protection for 20 years as from the international filing date (for PCT applications) and as from the national filing date (for national and convention applications) according to the Egyptian IPR Law No. 82/2002.

Patents PROCEDURES-EGYPT

Requirements
Filing:
- A Power of Attorney legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- A deed of assignment legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- The name, address, nationality and profession or nature of business of the applicant(s) and the inventor(s).
- The specification in English as per the following:
- Prior art
- Background of the invention
- Disclosure of the invention
- Detailed description of the invention
- Embodiments of the present invention
- Claims
- A brief description of the drawings sheets.
- A summary of the invention (abstract) in English and Arabic (about 100 words).
- One set of the drawing sheets.
- A commercial extract, certificate of incorporation, certificate of good standing or business licensing legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- A certified copy of the priority document must be submitted within three months, in case of convention application.
Notes:- Items Nos. 01, 02, and 07 should be filed within 04 months from the filing date; otherwise, the application will lapse.
- The Arabic translation should be filed within 06 months. The priority document must be filed within 03 months from the filing date to preserve priority rights.
- Item No. 08 should be filed within 03 months from the filing date.
- Items Nos. 02, 07 and 08 are only required for convention applications.
Assignment & merger:
- A Power of Attorney legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- A commercial extract, certificate of incorporation, certificate of good standing or business licensing legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- A legalized deed of assignment signed by both parties.
License agreement
- A license agreement signed by both parties and legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- Commercial extract, certificate of incorporation, certificate of good standing or business licensing legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
Change of Applicant’s Name/Address
- A Power of Attorney legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- A change of name and/or address certificate legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
